Adhesions
Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008
Adhesions are essentially scar tissue in the muscles, ligaments or tendons. They feel like “knots.” Adhesions reduce the range of motion and can be painful to touch. Normal muscle fibers slide over eachother to contract and lengthen. An injury to a muscle, ligament or tendon creates extra collagen. The extra collagen interferes with the normal muscle fibers and makes them stick to eachother instead of gliding. The “stickiness” of fibers creating a “knot” is what is refered to as: adhesive.
Treatment: The goal is to break up adhesions to restore normal range in muscles and joints. Adhesions can be broken up with regular massage and deep tissue massage.
